I have a decorator friend. She does a lot of staging of new homes to sell and those all get the bare and dull design with one wow feature. Most all magazine layouts of homes are staged to be full of wow but not so much functional or even very comfortable, She said that is what most everyone assumes is the fashion because that's how the homes look now. She said it's because it's the cheapest way to stage a new home to get it to sell. Same as the open concept became the want to have now. It is much cheaper to build without a lot of walls and contractors embraced it as the only way to build the average homes now. LOL Her own home has lots of heavy furniture with thick drapes on the windows and lots of quilts.

I was paging through a new homes book and they were all decorated in pure white. What the heck? Who can live in a place like that?

Cheap to stage for model homes. Only expense is the housekeeper you need. LOL
