For this machine, you would need a frame to use the stitch regulator. Bernina makes several models, with a stitch regulator and can be used with or without a frame. The Bernina models use an optical unit to determine fabric movement. The regulator for this machine uses mechanical units (wheels) to determine movement.

I have one on a Bernina frame, and though I love the machine, it works well one this frame, and it's better than a machine w/ a regular size throat, but you will end up with only about 7" of sewing space. If your budget allows you to go to a larger machine I suggest you do that.
