Default Japan Quilt Festival

Michele Hill on her William Morris blog on blogspot has posted many photographs of the Beatrix Potter quilts on display at the Japanese quilt festival. What beautiful, intricate work. My question. It looks like many of the quilter's have outlined the edges of their applique figures with permanent fine tip pen. I am intrigued by the look this technique gives the applique figures. Maybe this is new just to me. Does anyone know how this is done?

Edit-Actually, it is the Tokyo Quilt Festival. Some of it looks like embroidery work, but some of the detail looks like fine tip pen. Perhaps I am wrong, but that is how it looks to me.

She says at the bottom that most have been hand quilted, appliqued and/or embroidered. Many of them look like fabric panels with backstitching in a dark embroidery thread. Gorgeous display.

Awe inspiring work! I see some with black blanket stitch edges which is a very old technique and one that looks like Zentangles which is about a 5 year trend. The Peter Rabbit one does look like black outline but that may be appliquéd from a fabric or she did it herself with a marker. Using paint and marker to highlight work is not new but very nice effect.

Michele has added two new blog entries since I posted the link. To see the Beatrix Potter quilts, you gave to scroll down two posts. All the quilts from the Tokyo Quilt Festival are breathtaking in design and intricacy of work. I wonder how long it takes them to complete a quilt? I would love to see them in person. It would also be interesting to take classes in the techniques they use. Does anyone know if there is a book or tutorials available to learn these techniques?
