I heard someone talking about attaching the binding on the longarm and watched some videos on YouTube about the process. I really hate binding my quilts so I thought I would give it a try. OMG I will probably never do it any other way it worked so well and it was easy. So has anyone else tried it and what did you think?

Good question. I’ve also watched a video...maybe on the HandiQuilter tutorials. I’ve often wondered the same so I will keep my eye on this thread.

Guess I need to try to find that video. I’ve never heard of anyone doing this. I have so many questions now....

Ckcowl, one of the videos that I watched was by APQS with Dawn Cavanaugh (sp). I don't know if the way I did it was the right way because I didn't start in the middle or the top. I was at the bottom of the quilt so I rolled it up so that I started about 18 inches up the one side, mitered my corners like normal and worked my way up and around back to where I started. Dawn said in her video that she attaches the end on the DSM but I did right on the longarm! I am pretty sure that this process might be easier for someone using a sit down but for those of us who have a frame, well all I can say is this is my new favorite way of attaching my binding!

I do my binding like this all the time since I saw it on YouTube (probably the same video you saw ). I always start on one side several inches from the bottom since that's where I am when I finish quilting. Work my way across the bottom and up the other side as far as I can, keep rolling upward as I stitch, go across the top and back down. Sure better than wrestling with a large top on my DSM.

Granky all you have to do is do a search on You Tube and it will bring up what's available. I just watched as many as I thought were necessary so that I thought I was ready to give it a try. I think anyone that tries it will really be inclined to do it often. I have only done it on big quilts so I am getting ready to quilt 3 baby quilts so will see if it is as easy as it was on the larger quilt. BTW my friend doesn't have channel lock on her machine and she tried it and said it wasn't that difficult to stay straight. All I know is I am doing the happy dance no more struggling with binding on my DSM.

I haven't tried this but have a couple of questions--primarily, since the quilt is not trimmed yet, and I typically will do some last "squaring" when I trim after quilting, how do you do this (mark the spot for the binding edge? ) when you attach while still on the frame??

What do you mean exactly by "mark the spot for the binding edge"? Normally I put my binding fabric on the raw edge and sew a quarter inch seam so with this technique I did exactly the same. I even mitered the corners like usual. Hope I am answering your question. Seriously check out the video by APQS I think it will help you get it. I am a visual learner so that is what I did.

I am another one who uses the LA to attach binding. I hate to bind. I have started making my binding right after I finish a top and attach it to the top so that it's ready to go when I quilt the top. I sometime attach the binding as I quilt and sometime attach after quilting is finished.
Qshorttimer.... Dawn shows on the video that you stitch a straight line with channel locks and place the binding along that line ,then you trim at the edge of the binding. I don't stitch the line only because my quilts are probably as square as they are going to be when I put them on the frame, so I just line the binding up with the edge of the quilt. I haven't tried joining the binding on the frame but I have seen it done. Now if I could just figure out how to finish the binding on the LA. Did I say I hate to bind? I have made so much binding that I don't mind making it anymore. But that still doesn't make me like the final stitching! I'm looking for a binding attachment that will stitch both sides at once. I saw one on utube once a can't find it again.
