Then what could possibly show up that would determine the trade in value? Ask what it was.

If this is the same dealer that said there is no way and you find there is.... Find another dealer to buy from!

If there is a way to check, I would go back to the dealer and ask him why he said there wasn't a way. And if , as he said there wasn't, what he was checking on the machine. I'd want him to know that I knew how to check it and that I would be finding an honest dealer for future purchases.

Contact the manufacturer if you can find a phone number and ask for that info. If he lied to you, NEVER deal with him again. (might call another dealer for that particular brand of machine and ask them.)

The dealer may have just been checking the machine's function - making sure he could get into whatever menus, and that the display screen is working OK.

Try calling Janome at 1-800-631-0183 and ask for the technical dept. Surely they will be able to help you figure out if the hours and stitches can be found on your machines. I have called them before and they are very helpful.

Here is some info from a Janome forum. I have no idea if shaber20005's info is correct but that might be what the dealer did.

Of course, I was sitting on the other side of the machine and didn't see what he did.
Bought a used Designer 1Viking in 2005. The dealer was able to tell me that there were 15 hours of embroidering on the machine and I forget how many hours of sewing. The dealer said that was a very low number of embroidery hours. I asked why it was on sale. He said that the woman bought it for the embroidery and then decided she wanted more embroidery than this had to offer. Love my Designer 1. I would find another dealer. Quilters' Guilds are good places to get information about good repairmen/salesmen, etc.

I didn't know any machine had a counter on it. I will watch this thread to see if someone comes up with a way for the Janome machines.
