I was fortunate enough to take am applique class with Pat Campbell many years ago. Hands down, it was the BEST class I have ever taken! I have done many applique projects, including pillows and a large black quilt. I love it and have taught many people her technique. Yes, you can applique so that your stitches do not show it just takes practice.

IMO, I find the ladder stitch takes so much longer than the whip stitch and it looks the same to me when it's finished.

I bought Invisible Applique by Ami Simms to get me started in applique. She uses the ladder stitch. I pull it off pretty well on the long straight seams but have not mastered it on circles. The stitches I do correctly with it don't show.

I was never able to get whip stitches to be invisible. I must have the wrong technique. The ladder stitch is perfect for me!

I do needle turn hand applique and use only the tack stitch. Going around tight curves with the ladder stitch is a complete mystery to me.

I use the ladder for binding, whip for EPP and tack for applique. That's the easiest for me
