I use to. Know I have a bobbin for every color. When I need a new color I fill a new bobbin full. On white and black bobbins I have more then one filled.

Sure have as I have only so many bobbins for each machine. I will use different types of thread on the same project though if the color is correct...............embroidery thread in the bobbin, cotton thread on top and vice versa. I've been using the leftovers from my pre-wound bobbins for hand stitching the binding on quilts. One way to use it up and not waste.

I have done this also when it was just a small project and I didn't have an empty spool.

That was common for our ancestors because thread was expensive and a store might not have been nearby. They made do and it worked well for them.

I was thinking about embroidery thread - sometimes I only need a small amount of thread for sewing and the skein of embroidery thread is the "perfect color". I have used it for sewing.

I watch for bobbins at the thrift store and mark them with nail polish. I then wind the thread from my good bobbin to the old bobbin and save the thread for later.

My Mom always did that as well, she was a dressmaker.

I used to do it a lot, but since my machine dealer gives free bobbins every time you need a few extra, I don't do it very often any more.

Interesting thread. I have been sewing for more than 60 years and have never heard from ANYONE to not wind another color over what is already on the bobbin. Have never noticed any tension difficulties with ANY of the six machines I have used over the years. Hmmmmmm.
