Here's why: I like how the dark pink zigzags form a visual stairway "up" on the left and stairway "down" on the right.

Border B brings out the pale blue from the focal strip. (I'm not a fan of the pink border because it gets lost against the design. The first border--white only, if that's how I'm interpreting it-- is okay, too.)
I agree with these choices.

I think the blue border gives is balance by bringing the blue to the frame and doesn't distract from the matching strips. As far as the pattern, I think you will drive yourself crazy overthinking it. They are all good choices. Which one does you eye keep going to? That is the one to pick.

I don't care for the "pinwheel" one - because - even though the stripsets were placed straight, they give a wonky effect to me - which is sort of giving me a headache. Although there is a "lot" of movement in that setting - I think it looks sort of "clumpy"

As far as the other settings - if you go "up" and then "down" - would you change "direction" again for the other border? If you are having another border?

What I did - because I could not really tell the differences - I printed out this thread - and then I cut the various options a part.

Another choice that I didn't find is to make the steps go down on the left but back up on the right. Sort of a "heart" design. Border? At first I didn't see the blue as it's pretty light but the pink next to the pink of the steps is a bit much. It may look different in real time. Have you tried the pattern fabric as the border? Do you have a bit of the darker mauve that's in the patterned fabric?
