How can a traditional block, an antique block, a block that's been around 75-150 years be under a copyright?

The block wouldn't be, but a written pattern with instructions would. If you take a pattern that someone has produced for sale, photocopy and distribute it, that is a copyright violation.

Previously, I suggested she (quilt shop owner-OP) write up instructions to hand out.

The block is not under copyright.

I agree with you on both points. It would probably be best if she wrote up the instructions herself. But she was requesting help in finding an already written pattern. Hence the convo about copyright.

You are right copyright laws are interpretable by anyone - we try to do close to right but even with that one can mess up - better to not take the chance - not worth it!

Jenny Bowker has her Shimmering Triangles pattern on the market now - I found it on Craftsy, search for either Shimmering Triangles or Jenny Bowker AU. She also has a FB Page - kind of a 'support group' for those of us making this pattern lol. Would love to see what you come up with.
