It seems this man likes to interact using his love of gardening as a nice "excuse" to communicate. Why not make him a friendship braid quilt and explain or tell him the name of the pattern?

I was thinking about this option, too, ever since someone here recently posted an absolutely GORGEOUS one. The snowball block would be big enough to show off the fabric.

Any other ideas?? SEW many options...

I like to match my fabric to the quilt block name, here are some I found at quilterscache that have birds themes and are simple blocks.

    http://www.quilterscache.com/S/ShooFlyBlock.html

    http://www.quilterscache.com/W/WildDuckBlock.html

    Hope this helps
