I use the Bohn Chalk pencil, but I found it at Hancock fabrics and I can't seem to find them as cheap online. here's what it looks like:

But I also like the Clover ones with the little wheel. White chalk for darker colors and yellow for light works great.

I recently tried the "Pilot Frixion" pen to mark my quilting pattern on cream fabric.
Mine was the blue color. I marked my quilting lines and quilted with creme thread. I pressed with a hot iron and all the marks were gone. I worried the blue would not go away under the thread, but it did. I will not go back to using fabric pencils. I purchase my pen at a quilt shop.

I read somewhere, maybe on this site, about using Glad's Press'nSeal. It clings to the fabric, then you just draw your pattern or use your stencil on it, sew, then tear away. I have not tried this yet, but sounded interesting.

Somewhere here on the board someone used press and seal and the pen they used to mark it somehow got on the quilt. I don't know if it went thru the press and seal or rubbed off. But they were heartbroken because it wouldn't come off.
My biggest problem is that my quilts are usually light and dark. I never know what to use to mark them. I love the Frixion pens but what should I use on the dark fabric. I hate to keep switching pens as I mark.

I only straight-line quilt and I just mark it as I go. I use a white clover chaco liner for dark fabrics and a hera marker for light. Both don't last worth a darn so that's why I do it as I go.
and a side note: when my chaco liner ran out (it's probably 20 yrs or more old) I filled it with corn starch. It's not quite as good as the chalk powder but it's a heck of a lot cheaper.

someone mentioned they mailed quilts to someone and when they got them, they had the marks (because it was cold outside). Regardless of whether or not the marks can be *seen* they are still there, in my mind, even if invisible. So I wouldn't use the frixion.
