I like to use a sliver of soap. You know that's going to wash out when you wash the quilt. The soap can be sharpened on a sidewalk or driveway if you need to have a real narrow mark.

I have used "Golden Threads" paper for years. I love it and it removes easily from the quilt.

If you're referring to the good old yellow school pencil, no.


I use Silky Solvy. Make my design on paper and trace it with a black sharpie. I like to work with fine lines.

But how can one see the marking of soap on white or cream color fabric?
