Mary Ellen’s Best Press vs. Niagara Non-Aerosol Spray Starch
#14
Thanks for doing the comparison. You just saved me some money because I'd been thinking that the Mary Ellens must be the best for some reason. It's nice to know that I can just pick up some of the Niagara at my local grocers and have just as good a product if not better.

My last starch purchase was a gallon of Mary Ellens for $43. Works out to about $5.37 for 16 oz. So still more than Niagara but not as bad as $8 for 16 oz.
I also dilute mine by at least 1/2 ... so my cost is somewhere around $2.69 for 16 oz.
In a previous life I had only used starch on clothing, and had only used Niagara in an aerosol can and HATED the white flakes. I bought a small bottle of Mary Ellens for the few times I had to iron clothing (I'm a wash and wear kinda gal). I recently *discovered* the benefits of starch in quilting, so bought a gallon when it went on sale.
I honestly didn't know Niagara came in a non-aerosol, and that the non-aerosol didn't flake.
So thanks for the tip, sometime within the next decade when I need more starch I hope I remember to look for Niagara :)

I'm glad it worked for you :) I personally prefer the best press because I use the unscented, it doesn't mess with my alergies & asthma; and you can buy the refill bottle and get 4 bottles out of one. I don't have any problems with the sprayer either.

Niagara non aerosol is $1.69 at Meijer's, #1.87 at WalMart. I like the lavender. I now have three bottles. One regular strength, one cut with water - I like it better than sizing and one with Sta-Flo starch added to make it stiff for backings. Did I say I like the stuff?

I bought Mary Ellen's and thought it worked well enough, although I had to it 2 or 3 times to get some pieces starched enough. It never flaked. Then I tried making my own with Vodka (which is made from potato starch). It works as good as Mary Ellen's and is so much cheaper. When I was at Walmarts I saw the Niagara non-aerosol for only $1.87 for 22 oz. I had to buy it. I've been using it and the spray covers more area than I'd like at times and it has flaked at times. I will probably not buy Mary Ellen's again because of the price. I will probably make more of my own and will also buy more Niagara. Just my observations.
