Try blending greys with blues. You should come out with a denim hue. Sometimes the bright blues do look feminine.

Check out fabric in Plaids, Stripes, solids, or even a little Camping or Hunter's Camo Prints... combined together.. or if you can find some fabric in Men's Shirts or Chambray Shirts if you want to use something like that to get the colors you want... I have found NEW Shirts at the Thrift Stores.. Thats what our Grandmothers used was the Fabric from gently worn clothing...

I would think most blue batiks and blue civil war fabrics would read male. Lovely quilts posted by the way.

I just got to share the blue quilt I made for DH. It does have a few flower prints, but he has never said a word about the flowers. I put his name in the middle because my first biscuit quilt was stolen out of my DD's home. Steal this! Lol!

A safe bet is to use solids (or tonal). If you stay with choc brown, steel blues, greys and blacks, you should be fine. Break it up with a bit of a lighter color. Perfect example is loist's first quilt.

I made this simple HST for my big brother. I used lots of fabrics in it but I tried to steer clear of any florals. The mustard is a floral but it's hardly noticeable.
