most of the shops i frequent will cut 1/2 yards or larger, sale fabrics are almost always at least 1 yard cuts. they do offer fat quarters and other pre-cuts.

Usually buy in 1 and 2 yard increments. The occasional half yard for experimental purposes.

Just wondering if anyone besides myself has noticed that there seems to be a trade-off between price-per-yard and the minimum cut?

As in... bargain-priced websites that only sell in 1-yard increments? What if you really only need 1/2 yard (and have plenty of stash already)? Is it really a bargain, if you have to overbuy? Not that most of us mind having extra fabric... but when money's tight... it makes a difference.

I've bought many 1/4 yd cuts especially for specific a house project. Most of them have been from you and I really appreciate that I can do that!

Some quilts require a wide variety of fabrics, and being able to purchase 1/4yd cuts is wonderful.

For most purchases though, I do buy atleast one yard cuts :D:D:D

I love being about to get odd size cuts online, but I will be more likely to buy a yard or more of fabric. but then it just depends on need vs money.

What's the typical "minimum cut"? Do you have to buy full yards? Or 1/2? Or 1/4?
Usually they want a full yard cut, but you can find them for less, just not often. I've also noticed that the "sale" fabrics inside quilt shops require a 1 yard cut. I did a lot of shopping cross country this summer and was surprised to see this trend.

I mostly shop at places that will cut 1/4 yards. I've found, though, that I like 3/8 better when the yardage is cut width of fabric. It's a nice balance between 1/4 and 1/2. Stitch-n-Frame in Mississippi and Fabric Shack in Ohio are two that come to mind that will cut 1/4 yards.

I just ordered some yesterday and because it was a closeout, I had to order a full yard. Well, I needed 5 yards so no problem. Regular-priced fabric will be cut at 1/2 yard increments.

If I want 1/4 yard, I usually get FQs.
