mixing flannel and cotton
I bought panels online not knowing they were flannel. I am going to make baby quilts I guess with flannel back. Can I use cotton for borders? Also do I need to prewash the flannel? I know you smart ladies will help me as I have never made a flannel quilt before. Dee

Yes, you can mix flannel and quilting cotton. normally I would wash & dry flannel at least twice, but I don't know what to tell you about a flannel panel. If you do decide to prewash the panel, I would stay stitch around the perimeter before doing so as flannel is a looser weave and may fray more.

I mix the two all the time. I prewash if the flannel is thin with a loose weave. ( it shrinks a lot but is much nicer to work with) if it is a nice flannel I don't always prewash. I never prewash more than once.

I mix flannel and cotton all the time. I'm not a prewasher and I've never had a problem, but if you're worried about it wash both fabrics first. I made baby blankets out of flannel and regular cotton and mixes of both, I wash them when I'm done with them and then I roll them up, tie with ribbon, wrap and gift. Panels are really fun...have fun with it!
