I'm the odd man out! Years ago, I tried to do this many times and it never worked once. If I'm using white thread, I can't even SEE the thread poking out from my fingers, and if I'm using a short quilting needle with an impossibly small eye, forget it. I have no problem just poking the end of the thread right through the eye of the needle, so that's what I stick with.
