Madamekelly -- very clear & very clever of you! That makes a whole lot of sense! Kudos!

I make mug rugs about 6 by 10 - large enough for a mug and a snack in a bowl or plate. I do not usually do any fancy block, just sandwich the top and bottom with batting, quilt and bind (sewing on the back, topstitching on the front) . I found that craft batting is a tighter weave than W&N, giving it more stability. In any event, they wash up nicely and this way they are quick. I do not do applique as a cup could tip on it.

Google or Pinterest are your best bets for a visual.

So far, my searches online on this site have not found very many, though I remember seeing lots over the last couple years. Different sizes, shapes, scrappy, versus a "pattern", and so on.

Would you folks be willing to post your ideas to this thread so I can have a bunch in one spot?

Or make some suggestions of how to find them - other than on the www?

Thank you for your help!
Thank you for the link, I, too, appreciate it!

quiltenNan, love that paw print and would pay for it even though I do embroidery and applique. it's a sure winner.

I make all my mug rugs 5x7 and put them in a cellophane bag with a little explanation about what they are. Most people really don't know what they are, so a message is necessary and the bag keeps them clean. http://www.creativegiftpackaging.com...gs_p/c69lb.htm
