What a beautiful story and gorgeous quilt!! I am sorry for your family's loss but you clearly have wonderful memories and a beautiful quilt to remind you of your MIL. Your grand daughter is young and when she is older she will appreciate it as a family heirloom.
I would never fmq the lace. If I did anything on the machine, it would be to sew the lace down at the edge. Better still I might hand stitch it on. I can not believe that even after your cat helping and your handquilting that it is "dirty" but when it needs it I would hand wash it with something very mild. There are some commercially made products for this. Also, here is a link from Michigan State University that I found about caring for antique quilts. It has a lot if good information in it. It suggests (about half way down the page) that in the event of needing a real washing you should use either Ivory liquid or Orvus Soap.

You have done a wonderful job on your restoration.

Jan, it is sad to note that your dear MIL didn't get to see the actual finished quilt but I'm sure she would have felt enough of your love and warmth through the making of the quilt as it progressed, so she felt it was time to slip away peacefully. May she rest in peace. I can't offer any advice on the crochet lace because I haven't worked with that yet - I did make some Zundt lace about 10 years ago for a beautiful rose tablecloth but I haven't sewn it to the cloth yet because it feels too heavy. Lovely to see the quilt finished.
