My grandmother used to have African Violets (many years ago) and my biggest memory of them was her sending some home with my mother and having them die EVERY time. She tried and tried to pass her green thumb on to my mother, but she could never make it with African Violets. She does have a green thumb on outdoor plants - geraniums, petunias, etc.

African violets need to be root bound to bloom. If you have your violet planted in a large pot remove most of the soil and add some perlite to about half the size of the pot then replant the voilet. that will get the voilet rooted faster.
Voilets will grow well with a wick threaded throught the soil and placed on a butter or sourcream container with a small hole cut in the top for the wick to go through.
place the water and plant food mixture in the container and then place in the window or under lights.
