My mother had the same cabinet, which I have now. However, my dad tossed the machine that was in it. I scream every time I see a picture of these old machines because if I had only known I would have told him I'd take the machine with the cabinet.

I have my mom's. I went online to the singer web site. The number on the front of the machine is what you want to look for. I found that mine was a 1947. I need to get it in for some cord replacements and have not been brave enough to try it until it has been serviced. Have fun. I'm looking forward to getting mine done so I can use it. I learned to sew on this machine and it is one of the few things my mom gave just to me.

I have to admit, I am a little jealous of both the machine and your confidence in cleaning it up!
What a good deal for you!
I do want a 201 "someday" as the throat is wide for FMQ and the feed dogs drop AND I believe it uses all the same feet my Featherweight does because its a low shank.
Excellent shopping, friend!

I'm guessing late 1940,s. I learned to sew on one just like this in the early 70's. My mother is 81 and bought it with her first pay check she earned just out of high school. Wish we still had the ole girl!! I
just don't think you can beat that solid metal!!! Congrats!!

The Singer company kept good records and the serial number will date it - except for a few lost records. Here is the site. After you look it up on the left column, use the right column to go to the next page and get more info. http://www.singerco.com/support/machine-serial-numbers She was born in Nov 1956 in Elizabethport, NJ, so it's not a very old machine. Happy sewing.
55 years old is not exactly new... I'd certainly have taken advantage of it for $5! Good buy!
