Default Need advice for complementary colors on toddler's truck-themed quilt

I am making a quilt for my grandson who is turning two in Sept.

I am using the "Pinwheel Pals" pattern from American Patchwork & Quilting and I plan to use this Go-Go Trucks fabric for the squares. I will use a minky fabric backing, no batting (it gets WARM here in the South!).

He is a HUGE fan of the "little blue truck" book series.

What color/print fabrics would you use for the pinwheels? I'm thinking spring green dots and something darker. Then again, it's supposed to suggest "little blue truck" so maybe a bright blue polka dotted fabric and something darker?

Bonus points if you can recommend a fabric for binding and a minky fabric for the backing, LOL.

I like high contrast, so I probably would use a black like the one shown on the pattern. If you don't like black, then the darkest blue that matches.

I'd make the pinwheels in the lime green or bright yellow, maybe with white dots, and the bright blue.

Why not mix the pinwheels up, using the red, blue, yellow, green and orange in the quilt? One could be orange and blue, one yellow and green, one red and green, and so on. Be sure you use a bold, well saturated yellow, to keep the contrast.

Oh what a FUN quilt this will be!!

Blue and yellow ... to keep with your blue truck theme and yellow for the sky!
Or Blue and green ... blue truck and green grass!
Or could do a mix of colours, keeping the blue as the constant.

Binding ... finish off with the blue constant.

I really like the print ... but not seeing it IRL, just want to remind you to check that the print is small enough that it will show nicely in the blocks. If it is two large, you'd totally lose it, unless, you do some fussy cutting ... but that's a whole pile more work!

Good Luck ... Look forward to seeing the finale!

These are terrific ideas! I love the color combo suggestions. Also I would have never thought about doing multiple colored pinwheels.

I bought the print fabric sight unseen online and there was no measuring tape displayed to tell me how big the print is (and how large the trucks are!).

As soon as it arrives I will post some sample color combos for everyone's purview.

Food for Thought ...if the print is too large/small ...
... you can always resize the blocks and pinwheels, to work better with the print.

There is a quilt pattern with this collection of fabric that only uses 1/4 yard of Go-Go Town White by Kate Mawdsley for Henry Glass & Co 1133-01 It looks like this particular fabric in the quilt finishes at 6" blocks. There are only four of them and since the quilt is so busy it is kind of hard to see . It looks like if fussy cut that the two blue pick-ups measure about 6" (in the upper left of the quilt. So there would be some of the buildings in the 8" squares of this fabric. I'm thinking finished 8" blocks would get more of the semi truck in one square. I'm thinking that the finished 8" square of this fabric would look good in the pattern you have chosen.

Wow, OurWorkbench, excellent investigative skills! I love seeing the print in action.

It sounds like my plan might work.

I can't wait for the fabric to arrive. Glad I got extra so I can showcase the pattern.
