When I finally make my bags, I will use the plastic canvas. Keep in mind that the plastic canvas comes in different 'weights'. You will want to buy the more sturdy one or use two or three lighter ones whipstitched together.

USING PLASTIC CANVAS IS THE FIRST THING THAT POPPED IN MY MIND. I PURCHASED A CLOTH BAG ALREADY MADE AND THEY USED A PIECE OF HEAVT CARDBOARD AND PLACED IN A POUCH MADE OF THE SAME MATERIAL AND CLOSED IT WITH A PIECE OF VELCRO, SO ALL COULD BE WASHED.

How about those plastic needlepoint canvas and use 2 of them.. Encase them in material just as you would for the cardboard.
I know I am not crazy about cardboard either as it can bend. Make the encasement removable. If it won't stay in place, use pieces of velcro.

I purchase placemats on clearance and use them in bags and purses. They work perfectly. And on clearance, usually $1, I can get several bottoms out of one placemat.

I have used foam core board and plastic canvas, putting then in a little cover...read where you can use old worn out rotary cutting mats, I have one, so the next tote will try that out.
