Need help with determining square size
I need help with figuring out what size to cut squares to make my DGS a quilt. I am making him a quilt using the simple pattern from the quilts for kids pattern. I want to make a matching quilt for his beloved stuffed dog but much smaller. I want make it using 4 inch squares of the matching print but for the life of me, I can not figure out what size to cut the squares for the 4 patch. Can anyone help me? Math is NOT my strong point, if that is not obvious. LOL!!!

You wouldn't need many 4" squares. How large do you want the dog's quilt to be? Just make the squares whatever size you feel comfortable using. Keep adding squares until it's the size you want it to be. I think I'd start with 2" squares finishing at 1 1/2".

If I understand correctly, you're alternating plain squares with 4-patches. If the plain squares finish at 4", then the 4-patch pieces need to finish at 2", so they would be cut at 2.5". However if the plain squares are cut at 4" and therefore finish at 3.5", then the 4-patch pieces need to finish at 1.75", so they would be cut at 2.25". Hope this helps.

Dunster, Thank you so much, I am horrible at explaining things. Yes, the print square and the 4 patch alternate. Gabe, my DGS, wants a quilt for him and his doggie as soon as I can make them. So the simple pattern seemed the quickest to make and have matching quilts.
