the directions of the seams are a concern depending on how the quilt is to be quilted- if you are sending it to a long-arm quilter the recommendation is for the seams to be horizontal- if they are vertical there is a large amount of bulk built up when the quilt is loaded on the rollers- horizontal seams lay flat along the poles- if you are using a domestic machine- or hand quilting it is not such an issue. but any time you are using a frame that the quilt will be loaded onto rollers- the seams should be along the poles- not down the center vertically

I am sure I'm not an expert, by any means, but I do have a long arm and use scrappy backs with seams going every which way without much trouble. I DO try not to get up to top speed going over all those seams tho! Each long armer has her own 'wish' list, so if you are sending it out, be sure to ask what HER requirements are.

unless you got a really good deal on your 44" fabric the cost is about the same if you get the wider fabric. Calculate the amount you need in 44" which is three widths. You don't say what the size is of your king quilt. But say it is 108x108. That is 3 yds so allow an additional 6" per length. That makes 108 plus 6 + 114" times 3 lengths.
That is 9.5 yds and if - say $8 per yd = $76 vs about $15 per yd for 108 fabric = $45. You may, however got the fabric at much less. But even at $6 per yd that is $57. And you wn't have to piece the back.
