I really like the Arkansas Crossroads block for this type of quilt. With various color choices, it can be so different, and never looks "too sweet" unless you want it to!

Another idea is the Disappearing 4-Patch. It's great alternated with solid blocks to make it less busy. Like this one:

    Default Little girl's quilt idea.

I made The Jelly Roll by the 3 Dudes. You can find the tutorial on Missouri Star Quilt Company. It is easy & fun!!!

it took me a few days but one of the cutest quilts for her Grandaughter's big girl bed I've seen posted on QB was gailmitchell's quilt posted under the title...... Presenting-Rainbow Lollipop Quilt. It is in bright colours with a really cute sides with grass and 2 cats. The main part of the quilt Is white with bright lollipops, butterflies and flowers. Put the title in the search box and be prepare to be wowed.

I made a bed-size twin quilt for my DGD when she was 5. It is too big and heavy for her to handle so she rarely uses it - prefers her lightweight cheapo "Princess" coverlet. I can't help with colors, but I do suggest you make this one more of a throw size if you want her to use it.

PS, QuiltnNan, I love your watercolor!
