I like Warm Wishes, too. It's very similar to, yet easier and quicker than, Rail Fence which has also been recommended. Warm Wishes can look stunning with the right fabrics, one focus fabric and three coordinating blenders.

I often make bed sized quilts bc that's the size of the quilt that I use on my sofa when watching television. we tend to use larger quilts. I wouldn't worry too much about exact size.

I love lap quilts!!! You never can have too many. Quick and Easy - tumblers are so easy and quick and looks like a lot of work but its not. Straight seams. If you want very simple and a quilt in a day...I would recommend that one.

Bonnie hunter's strp twist
It is just sewing strips together, cutting, rearrange and voila you have a amazing secondary effect and also blocks with points. It looks way more amazing then it is hard to make and sews up in no time. I do second the lap quilt idea. 50-60 or 60x70.

Just be sure to pay attention to alternating light and dark strips but even if you don't it still looks good. Here is one I did mix up on the alternating light and dark but it came out nice. I bought some wild horse patterned fabric to go on the border to add a theme and visual interest. (donation quilt)

A friend is moving into a new home in early January. I would like to make her a quilt as a house-warming gift. I haven't got a lot of experience making full-sized quilts. I want to do a quilt rather than a wall hanging.
I have an idea about what colors to use but I need a pattern ....something that will go together quickly as I still have to finish Xmas sewing. Would appreciate some ideas. Photos or links would be great! I have googled and found lots of patterns but I thought I would also ask here.
Thank you.
