When I first started quilting, I bought anything that I thought was pretty. Now, I feel that if I am going to put that much work into something, I want it to last a long time.

If I'm going to put that much work into a quilt then I want to use fabric that feels nice when I'm using it and will stand up to using and washing when I'm done. If I'm making a pot holder then that's another story. I'll use fabric that is not top notch there because it's more disposable.
I find some of my best fabric in the bargain room/shelves of quilt shops as the prices are usually 50% off. Most quilt shops have them. Ask if you don't find them because often times there are not that prominent. Nearly all the backs for my quilts come from this source. I have also had good luck with fabric from some on-line stores.
