Has anyone used the jelly roll sold at Big Lot? It feels thin. Will it last as a quilt or should I just spend the money and buy better fabric.

From my own experience, if you're making a quilt, you're much better off buying a better quality fabric. If you're only making place mats or something like that, cheaper fabric is not great, but O.K.

If you haven't purchased it yet, save your money. I look at the thread count and also not all jelly rolls are the same as we all know. The strips in the jellies at Big lots are irregular. Most of the ones I've seen are not even 2" wide and some are barely 18" long. So if you pre-wash like I do (using laundry bags) the shrinkage is like 30-40%. If I had not pre-washed, I would've had a mess on the little practice (even) project I was going to do. The jelly roll is now in the stockpile of scraps.

I was taught from Harriet Hargrave to always buy the best fabric you can afford.

I have purchased the jelly rolls from Big Lots and while you aren't getting LQS quality, they will still make a nice quilt. I had 7 rolls of one colorway and 5 of a different colorway and never experienced any issues with the strips being off in width or length. The ones I purchased had only 24 strips, so you have to keep that in mind when calculating how much you need. Below is one I recently finished from Big Lots jelly rolls (I did add some fabric I already had) and the quilt washes up great. At least the cats seem to enjoy their daily naps on them!

And, I wouldn't use any fabric I was worrying about.
