I think almost any pattern would work.
It's the fabric choice that would make a quilt look more for a man than woman.
Jacob's Ladder is one of my favorite patterns
I've made a quilt with a block that's called Blockade twice for men.
Another was Mary Ellen Hopkins' Brick Wall.

I think stars and log cabin combined in beige and browns, reds would make a great man's quilt

The one thing I have that my mother made me is a crocheted granny square afghan. This month on the cover of American Patchwork and Quilting is a Granny Square quilt. It looks almost like the crocheted version. That to me would be a perfect gift for a new home.

Log Cabin will probably always be a favorite because it was my 1st quilt but I also think it is a neat house warming gift because of the whole center square for "hearth", etc. And plaids would be SO pretty.

Log Cabin is so traditional for a new home, and I love them. that would make it the perfect choice for me.

Log cabins are great, I love them. I made my son a bear paw in homespuns and tan when he got his first house. Bear paw and stars can be whatever you want them to be.

My brother who is 40 love the optical illusion type quilts, like tumbling blocks and he really loves the Jinny Beyer ones like Night and Day, Faberge and Da Vinci

Yes I do know what colours he likes best - he is partial to greens and also likes blues.
