Yea for the great news! I made my doctor one of those scrub hats they wear using novelty fabric. It was small, easy to make and she seemed so happy to have had me hand make something for her. Wish I could remember where I found the pattern

My DH is an MD and their website at work includes some personal interests...actually, they haven't loaded those yet, but they were supposed to. You might find something there. I would say something small, like a mug rug, a glasses case if he wears glasses, a shopping type bag for hauling books...
My hubby has a few "doc" dwarf things. This time of year you might even find a doctor tree ornament on clearance. After all, its the thought that counts. But do skip the chocolate and sweets, we get way too much of that stuff. If you have to do food, do fruit or nuts or cheese.

Check with his office to see if he has a favorite kind of coffee he likes, an insulated mug and a couple of mug rugs. You have one wonderful doctor! He's a keeper! :-D

You would be surprised, but most doctors do not get many thank you gifts. Most people are unsure of what to give and end up giving nothing. I would make him a quilt for his office. Go all out! Lap quilt is probably the right size. Imagine when patients ask about the quilt and he tells them that a patients wife made it for you. He will be so proud. And the next time a family waits for news, good or bad, he will remember how much it meant to you and yours. Go for it!

Any of the clothes sewing books in the uniform section have patterns for surgical hats.

Thank you all for suggestions. I am going to contact his nurse and see what I can find out about his likes and dislikes. Will keep you posted as to what I am doing.

WOW What wonderful news, and what a good Dr to care enough to go out of his way. Do you remember how the office is decorated? Maybe something in the line of a wall hanging for there?

You could make that quilt with hearts and applique on it "Dr. Whatshisname, the doctor with heart".
