My grandson is 12. He discovered music last year. I made him a BQ quilt in red, black and white with musical notes on it. I labelled it MUSIC LOVER 2010. He loved it. What hobbies or sports does she love? I did take a child to pick out fabric years ago for a quilt. She still has it and had painted her bedroom to match the quilt. You're making a memory!

some also like pink and black and or blue and brown...
but definately ask her....that will make all the differnece. I also sit down and go thru a magazine or book with a client to get a feel of what they like, some are contempory, some like traditional, some like pieced, some like applique...some like flowers, some hate flowers.....you have to ask questions....

You could get one of those little do-dads that iron on the jewels (I have one and for the life of me can't think of the name) I made a quilt for my niece and put all kinds of jewels on it...the more bling the better. :)

I agree on bright colors (at 12 my favorite color combination was teal and purple!), and graphic prints would probably go over better than soft, mottled, or batik prints.

My avatar quilt is one I did for my DGD who is 11. I agree with the others, find out her favorite colour and then any pattern will do... to personalize it, you could find out if she has any passions, music, art or animals and applique it on the front, like I did with the horse.

I like to use a quilt as you go pattern called "Scrappy Serger Quilt". Can be made with a regular sewing machine and uses 1/4 yd. ea of 12 different fabrics. The brighter the better. I've made several and donated to our local hospital peds ward.
