New, Modern Fabrics...Can We Quilt With Them?
#11
I never put much thought to other fabrics than cotton for quilting once I learned many many years ago about polyesters. Cotton is a safe fabric to use that can last more than 100 years if treated properly. I don't know about the foot print is leaves or how others hold up for the long run. Cotton too is bio-degradable, it just takes longer . I will stick with what is familiar to me.

I love cotton too, although I know that it has a large carbon footprint. It's what I've grown up with. Honestly, I don't think that I'll see these newer, sustainable fabrics in my lifetime. I think that it's generational thing. What will our children use? They are more open to new ideas and under more severe, environmental pressures.

I do think about what I am using and how to reuse or recycle or buy greener in the beginning. I think we only have less than perfect alternatives to pick from. Even recycling takes energy. Short of making our own fabric over a fire (that pollutes the air) out of twigs and leaves it looks like we will have to pick something already mass produced. What is the lesser of the options? I don’t know.
