A Brother cs6000I can be purchased, used, for under $100. It has a button on the front that substitutes for the pedal. Controlled by the touch of a finger. I hope you find something for you friend so she can discover the joy of sewing. Good luck.

I found a Singer 403a that is set up with the knee lever. It took me a bit to get used to it, but I like not having to find the foot pedal on the floor.

Can she use her embroidery machine for regular sewing? I have some and can use for both.

I would be wary of buying a second-hand machine from a dealer that is 2 hours away. I think the dealer is more important than the brand of machine. Do you have a dealer that is closer?

Many of the Phaff sewing machines have a knee lever you can insert to use instead of a foot pedal. Many can be found on auction sites at times.

That's the closest dealer we have. He has a Brother that he is willing to guarantee service for. She's going back Saturday to test drive!! It's a factory recondition with a warranty. Thank you everyone! I will let you know what she gets !

I wouldn't recommend ANY low end Singer, Brother and Janome though, have a fairly good reputation, even on the low end.
