Fastpedal, I've been sewing through paper for my quilting off and on for the last 20 years. I started with tissue paper but it didn't hold up quite well enough most of the time and then some of it has a thin plastic coating that makes it difficult to come off.

For me, I've found the perfect cheap solution: Parchment Paper! I get it from the dollar store in rolls that are 1 foot x 25 foot, so that's enough for a crib sized project, 2 boxes for twin/queen. It is thin enough to see through and easily trace, yet durable enough to sew through, and then easy enough to remove. I also have a stack of newsprint for block designs. It has uses but you can't see through it. But, if I want to make a stack and sew the design (no thread) to make punches to follow, it works better for that.

Downsides: You have to spend first the time tracing the designs and then pulling the paper off. Graphite from pencil can transfer off onto white thread, be aware of that if you are using white.

Upsides: It gives me the results I want which is why I'm doing it.
