Thanks for all your suggestions. I auditioned and came up with this. First blue Scraps then brown and multicolours.
It is destined to become a play mat - layered to an old cotton blanket and backed with denim. Will be a gift for the baby of a girl who grew up across the street - first baby.

I think that a darker brown border would set off your center block nicely. And then maybe a multicolor binding.
