Yeah, I've had a few times when I've wanted to bang my head on my sewing table! Glad you can still use them for a different design.

I normally do a test block when I need a stripe going a particular way. So tricky working with stripes. Been there, done that so you are not alone.

When you are cutting striped HSTs from squares:
1. Lay your squares out with the stripes all facing the same way.
2. Cut each square in half on the diagonal from top left to bottom right.
This must always be done on the same angle to have the stripes the same in all HSTs.

I would put all the horizontals on one row and all the verticals on another - Design Element!!

I would lay them out and maybe you can rearrange to where they will work.

did you make enough that you can put them right across the center? or maybe just 2 or 3 so you can set them in randomly? Remember, quilters don't make mistakes - we just create new ways of doing something! These HSTs will make this a very unique quilt!!!!

I guess I'm not a quilter - I still make LOTS of mistakes - I call them learning opportunities - the results are seldom new design choices!

Been there, done that more times than I care to count. I realize you know they aren't going the way you planned, however, I don't think your grandson will notice or care. Although I know it's frustrating, and I wish I had a magic answer for you, but I don't. I'm sure the quilt will be wonderful.

I've done that as well. Glad you were able to play with them and arrive at a solution that pleased you. Show us when you're through piecing.

Excellent advice. It doesn't work for double directionals, but works well with geometric patterns. Upside down fish are not a good look. We have a lot of "scraps" from that quilt.
