I was also going to suggest Esther Aliu. She has beautiful quilts. She currently has several that are free. I am in love with her Oma's Blues pattern. I don't hand appliqué and am tempted to start it. I have been drooling over it for months. There are tips and instructions on her blog. Her Love Entwined patter is a real WOW quilt.

My first ever applique was made using a free pattern from RJR, Robyn Pandolph "a winter dance". I did change a couple things to make it mine. I changed the heart to a shallow dish like you see bonsai trees grown in. Instead of the circles, I used yoyos.

I like Pat Campbell's Jacobean Quilt patterns. She has a tree of life pattern as well as two or 3 books to choose from, all done in needle turn applique.
