I would not opt to do that if the quilt would ever be handled by the baby, just not worth the risk.

My husband when in grade school lost a button on his coat and rather than lose the button he put it in his mouth for safe keeping. Don't you know, someone bumped him and he swallowed the button. Had it not been for the fact it had large holes he would have died. As it was he almost lost his life.

No buttons on baby quilt.... or a quilt that a doggie may sleep on. My Sadie doggie (a rat terrier) has eaten the buttons off the quilt I put them on every chance she gets. Hummm... wonder if they may have been the cause of the stones in her bladder that we had to have removed this week.

My opinion is you'd be flirting with dissaster, no matter how securely you sewed/attached them. Recommend you find another way to embelish a baby quily - maybe applique a animal, shape, or toy of a different fabric (towel, corduroy, fuzzy, etc).
Just my opinion.

Never use buttons or such on baby quilts - they could pose a choking hazzard for baby.

I wouldn't take the risk. Just tack down or applique. I would use buttons on something intended as a wallhanging, but not something that the child would have.

I agree with the NO. Not a good idea. Unless this is going to be a wall hanging to much of a chance the baby/toddler would put it in their mouth.
