I have a Brother XR9000 sewing machine. It has the FMQ but the deck is very small. I'd like to buy the John Flynn system but the web site said that you need at least a 6" - 6 1/2" deck and my machine has just under 6". Of course I dream of a mid or long arm but don't have that kind of money. What is a good home FMQ machine with a large deck?

Are you lookinG for a machine that just does straight stitches? I have the Pfaff 12oo Grandquilter. A very similar machine is available from Juki, Brother, Janome, and Viking. These mechanical machines run up to 1600 stitches per minute and have a built-in scissors. On the Pfaff, there is a cover plate for the feed dogs - no dropping the dogs. Not sure how the others handle that. The bobbin is large and a side-feed design that is a bit hard to reach - but an insert guide can be bought. (I still need to get mine.)

For a regular computerized machine, there is a large-throat variety available in different price points from Janome, Babylock, Pfaff, Viking.......They all have features galore.

pfaff has a seond long arm and I am head over heels in love with it. Top of my wish list. Instead of the grand quilter, it has the pfaff hobby craft or something close to that as the machine. The foot print that is set up at the store where I found my new Pfaff, has a very small foot print and would work beautiful in a smaller home just has mine. Plus it does the pantagrams I believe is the spelling. And we are talking $4,000 vs $10,000 for the grand quilter. I'm probably way off base as usual, but for the money and what's on the equpment, it sounds waonderful and I did get to play on it for a bit. Can be operated from the front or the rear and it was a dream. A thought..

Mine is a Brother QC1000. I love it. It does beautiful FMQ stitches...I use the thicker batting and good quality quilting thread and fabric.
