I have done the strip piecing both with and without the paper. I found that without the stabilizing effect of the paper, my rows soon became wonky, and I lost some when trying to trim them to a particular width. Many of my strips are not on the straight of grain and the paper helps solve this problem. JMHO!

Shy,
Not a dumb question....I use the paper as a means of keeping the strip straight, so that it doesn't curve.

Since you are using scraps (usually) you can have all kinds of bias edges, etc. that will make your strip go wonky. (wonky is a very technical term). Once my pieces are sewn to the length of my paper strip, i trim to the width of the paper (3") before removing it.

Some years ago I was at Staples right before closing time. When checking out I overheard one employee ask what to do with all the boxes of paper rolls stacked in the back. The manager said just dump it before you leave. Well, I talked my friend to going back with me later that night. I thought it would be rolls of craft paper. We found three big boxes full of unopened packages of three rolls each of adding machine tape all different size widths. We got them all. This was when I first found out about strip sewing on the rolls. I stocked our guild closet with tape and it's still being used today.

I didn't have trouble taking off the paper, but I didn't enjoy it as the paper is a bit thickish and it was really boring.lol Also a good waste of paper. Try newspaper or telephone books.lol

Isn't it something how some places waste? That is terrible, but good that you got it out and used it!

Try a mom and pops office machine store - one might have some old yellowed rolls of paper tape for the older adding machines just sitting around. They might even have some already opened, partly used rolls of paper tape.

What else can be done with adding machine tape? As long as it's used it's not wasted.
