The kids and I went out to the store today to pick up some stretch pants for Morgan ( my 8 yr old who survived, and continues to survive a massive life changing stroke) Morgan can't wear pants with buttons or zippers because of the loss of her left hand...and we were discussing silly pants...how we needed some thing more colorful and full of sunshine like she is, so I cam up with the idea of making a pair of quilted stretch pants for her to wear, only thing is, I may have great ideas, but i have NO idea how to put them into action lol...so does any one have advice, patterns, ideas, anything that could help us create her own silly pants?

Maybe find a cheater quilt fabric. You could use that with any normal pants pattern.

How about leggings and sew patches on them. Kids around here tie dye their own leggings and paint designs on them and glitter. They are really cute.

Do they need to be stretch?

My granddaughter went through a period of "no zippers or buttons" at school because she wanted to get into and out of the school restroom quickly. She was afraid someone would come in while she was in there.

We made her a lot of shorts, capris and long pants with elastic at the top. You can get soft wide elastic for the waistband. That would let you use every beautiful and sunny piece of fabric you can think of.

I am so sorry that your daughter is experiencing this...

Follow the link to this tutorial for making a quilted jacket out of a sweatshirt and you could apply it to your daughter's stretch pants.

Ahh-h-h-h, just an elastic waistband? Go to a fabric store and get a pattern for elastic waist pajama pants and you can make as many as you want from many different fabrics. Or you could take apart a pair that she now has that may be worn out to use for a pattern, just remember to add seam allowances, and extra at the top to fold over for the elastic.
You can also make the legs shorter for shorts or capri length pants.
Another idea: sew together a bunch of pieces of fabric in any crazy design you and the kids decide, then use the pattern to cut the crazy pieces for the pant legs and sew together.
Sounds like fun to me!!!

find lots of silly knit fabrics, cut blocks, sew them together into large enough peices to lay pattern pieces down on, cut out your pattern and make the pants. greenpepper has lots of patterns for elastic waist (fleece) pants one of those patterns would probably work well. remember when using knits to use a stretch needle (ball-point) and a stretch stitch (zig=zag) we havent made any with regular knits but we've made quite a few fleece pairs. and i've made quilted clothing by just piecing fabric big enough to cut out patterns. works well and is very unique :)

I've never in my life make a piece of clothing, so i'm trying to do as much research as I can before i go ahead and try to do it lol :)
Morgans been a challenge, because she needs to easily get the clothes on and off with one arm, and it has to comfortable fit with her leg brace..so I've just been buying her stretch pants, but they are always so boring. I finally found a company that makes a shoe that will fit both feet without having to buy two pairs, the foot brace causes one shoe to never fit. So i figured we would work on the next challenge Pants lol
