Sorry you had a problem! Unfortunately, I have experienced the same. I was making a Hunter Star quilt and had strip pieced and cut as required, only to discover the book had an error. I had 96 pieced trapezoid units that were about 2" too small. If I had cut down the rest of the pieces to fit, I would have ended up with a crib size quilt rather than a twin. I couldn't find more of the same fabrics, and was so discouraged, I gave up. I still have the larger triangles, and will make something with them someday. I recycled the trapezoids and use for paper piecing. I'll just start it over someday.

Now, when I buy a book/pattern, I search for corrections on the book/pattern maker's website.

I had this happen with a Debbie Mumm pattern several years ago as well as a couple of magazine patters. I also now check on corrections on the web. American Patchwork and Quilting checks each block 4 times to be sure there is no errors.

I think this has happened to almost everyone and after the first time, I started making a copy of the finished block, getting out the graph paper to make sure all of the pieces fit before I cut that expensive fabric. I really hate to try to buy it all over again.

I just used a pattern that had a cutting error and I caught it as I was trying to figure out how a square piece was going to turn into a rectangle piece. When it caught my eye I read ahead and knew I had to cut it different. I didn't waste any fabric.

I try to look over the pattern. A few Quilting Treasures one had errors.

Yes, there was an error in a pattern on the About.com/quilting site. I started to do a small quilt, and quickly realized that the measurements were not correct. I figured it out, and then sent an e-mail to her about it. She replied with a thank you, and she corrected the pattern online. It all worked out!!

This is a good argument for making a test block - a habit I got into recently.

that is terrible, can you just make the blocks smaller and still use the fabric

Yes I had thought about doing that, but would rather make the original size if possible. I will try to use the other bits in the border. If not, I'm sure there'll be just another project around the corner ;)
