I'm in the find the fabrics first then pick a pattern group. But even if I have a pattern in mind, I agree that finding your main fabric is the first step. Next is picking prints that go with. I tend to look for smaller prints than in my focus fabric, with at least 2 or 3 of it's colors in them. After picking my prints, then I will look for some blenders to accent the colors I want to bring out the most. I like my blenders to have several shades of one color rather than, say, a batik with several colors swirled together. But that is just me. For example, for a green blender, I might pick a green with lots of different tiny green leaves on it.. all green but just different greens, as long as it complimented my focus fabric.

You might want to pick a focal fabric, then add additional colors that go with it. As few or as many as suits your fancy

I agree with many of the others, focus fabric first. Add from there. Don't be afraid to ask other shoppers, too. Can be a fun way to spend a morning or afternoon, if time permits.

I have the same problem trying to use up my stash. I have made friends with members of this board and when in doubt, I will send them an e-mail for their opinions.
