I piece with red too! Except on solid white piece sewn to another solid white piece. I was given 12 spools of Aurifil 50 wt red and I started using it for piecing.

I use either the lightest gray colored thread, or a very light green color. I have found that both of those colors blend well with any color fabric. The light green, I found completely by accident. I was piecing a quilt one day, in that time of day when it is not quite dark enough to turn on the lights. I picked up (what I thought was) my gray thread, and went to town. When I actually turned the lights on, I saw that I had picked up a very light green thread, instead. I thought I would have to undo everything I had done, but to my surprise, I blended just as well as the gray thread.

But I really don't think it will matter too much with the red.you just don't want the color to show through the white.
I agree, white would be best !!

I use white for most colors...but if it is really a dark color, I will use a grey. Can't see the stitching if I use black.

I only use white in all my piecing no matter what color the fabric is and never shows.
