I usually just put a band-aid on my finger with the padding of the band-aid on the sore part of my finger. I use "Working Hands" hand cream by O'Keefe every night and this helps the cracking of my skin too. This also helps the cracking of the skin by my nails that I get as I wash my hands many times a day. I really swear by this cream.

Lynnie, I had problems finding a thimble that worked for me when I came across one that is open sided and adjustable and I love using it. It's not too tight around my finger and stays on well. I've also had a lot of luck with the leather thimbles especially the ones that stretch over your knuckle so it doesn't fall off.

Those sticky things you can buy for rulers or as thimbles not sure of name .
personally I have false nails put on and use them to push the needle through the fabric and the other hand nail stops needle going too far. So far no holes.

Lynnie, I absolutely cannot sew with a thimble. It takes a week or so for my finger tips to callous up. Any kind of "bag balm" found in a feed store and maybe even WalMart will take the sting right out. Also, have had good luck with Aquaphor ointment made by Eucerin I believe. In CT, there are little adhesive, reuseable dots that you can buy. Can't say I've ever tried them but might be worth looking in to.00000

I like using these instead of a thimble:

The only remedy I have for sore fingers is just don't get stuck in the first place. Seems nothing helps except time. I use the dots when doing hand embroidery too.
