I have 2 lots of pins. Some are extra long, very fine and yes, they do bend easily. However, if I am using some heavy material or many layers I use some short stubby pins. The long pins are wonderful for piecing.

As I am old enough to have diapered my son in cloth diapers with diaper pins that didn't always glide smoothly into the diaper, I still use this trick with my sewing/quilting pins -- run the pin through your hair and it will pick up just enough oil to glide smoothly. Worth a try.

I use the flower head pins for most of my quilting projects. I always buy name brand pins because all flower head pins are not created equal. I have heard that silk pins are super sharp but they are also tiny.

Assuming you mean straight pins, I love the Clover Silk Pins. Silk pins are made to be thinner than other pins. They leave a tinier hole in the fabric & slide into it more easily. I've found them to be very sharp over a long time (though pins do need to be replaced from time to time as they get dull) and the glass heads are nice because I can iron over them -- just don't accidentally sew over them or drop them as they shatter (you know how I know).
The JAF site says they are only sold online, but I've bought them at my local JAF. They 40% off right now. http://www.joann.com/clover-silk-pin...g/2002723.html
