I like craft felt. It comes on a bolt and is different from regular felt. I get it at walmart.

I use thin fleece blankets cut up. I get them here for about 1.50$ apiece so I use for batting for almost anything, as many layers as it takes!

I use something called "The Cotton Theory Batting" that I get from Nancy's Notions. It's a 80/20% cotton/polyester batting, and you're looking for the very low loft kind. It leaves my placemats, table runners, etc., flat instead of puffy. I have even used it in a lap quilt when I wanted a light quilt. It had a beautiful drape to it. The more I used it, the softer it became.

I think, basically, you're looking for very low loft batting, in whatever brand you buy. Regular or high loft will make any placemats look puffy. The other choices suggested in this thread would also work, such as flannel, etc. I wouldn't use the heat shielded stuff for things like pot holders, or at least I should say that the stuff I have for that is pretty high loft and makes my pot holders quite thick and puffy. Perhaps there's some thinner stuff out there.

I too, use white craft felt off the bolt at Joann's. It is 60"
wide and lays very flat. I have used it for placemats and
table runners for at least 5 years...washs just fine.

I have some of that stuff from the Christmas section but thought it would be too "poofy" for placemats. I think I will give it a try. I don't really have any other use for it and I have 2 or 3 bags.
