Default placemats and kraft-tex

I have already gotten a lot of good help on the subject of kraft-tex but now I would like some opinions on placemats. My idea is to make quilted placemats w/Christmas fabric then applique gingerbread people, w/the recipients names embroidered on them, to the placemats. I can't decide on the exact look. I will put the gingerbread people on to the left or right of center (suggestions on which side?), and I thought about leaving the head part unattached so that silverware could be slid down in there...like a pocket. So the applique stitching would start at about the shoulders on the gingerbread people. Should I do a pieced placemat or just use a solid fabric? I guess that part is up to me but I thought maybe some of you would have some really great suggestions because ya'll are more creative than me. I could do more than one gingerbread person per mat, but there are just two mats so I thought I could do a girl for the wife and a boy for the husband, just one per mat.

Thanks for ideas and suggestions.

LOVE LOVE the idea. I would put the gingerbread people on the left (but that is just me). I would just make sure the head had reinforcement of extra stitching around its edges because it would get more wear and tear with silverware possibly being moved in and out of it. Pieced or solid material - seems llike either would work. I don't know anything about kraft-tex, so no opinions.

Those sound really cute. I wonder if putting the silverware down through the head (ouch LOL) - would tear the head off. You could applique some ribbons on either side of the body and tie the silverware on with a bow. I wouldn't put them in the middle, however. The plate would cover up the cuteness.

I think your idea would be so cute. Maybe get some gingerbread men fabric with tiny G-men on it. So the larger silverware one won't get lost. I didn't see any question about the kraft-tex??? Please post a picture when you get one made. I would love to see one.

Those sound very cute!

I'm planning to make some red placemats with machine embroidered poinsettias on them. A friend asked about using plain red fabric and whether it would get stained. With that in mind, I actually ordered a large table cloth to use for the placemats. It has a stain guard to help with that potential problem. Also, the table cloth fabric is polyester, so it shouldn't require as much ironing after being washed. Just thought I would share those ideas in case it's helpful.

Will look forward to seeing your placemats. I have no experience with kraft-tex.

Thanks everyone! The heads getting damaged could be a problem, so thinking along the lines of what was mentioned above I think I will put elastic on the hands where there is normally is rick rack and the silverware could slip in there. I will post pictures as soon as they are finished.

The kraft-tex thread is on the general chit chat board.
