yes, even a 1 1/2 inch sashing would give enough separation to the blocks and not make it too much larger. if you want wider sashings, think of putting in cornerstones to break up the spinning. wonderful quilt, nice of you to do.

I like it without sashing. I wouldn't bother with a border either. Just bind it in one of the dark fabrics and you're done.

I think this would look terrific with white fabric for the sashing - use the same fabric as the background of the blocks. I would also choose colored cornerstones, in a variety of colors from the pinwheels, placing them so that each cornerstone color is different from the pinwheels it is adjacent to. (Using a single color for all the cornerstones would also look nice.)

Thank you for your suggestions. I wanted to use sashing because I think it looks very busy too. I will use white and try it with 4 blocks surrounded by sashing. See if I like that. Not sure about a border yet either. It might need to be bigger in size so I will probably put a border on.

The white sashing would be very nice and soften the impact of all the angles. I would also consider a white border and perhaps a multi-color binding made from the scraps from the blocks. I like your bright colors. Please show us your finished quilt.

Another vote for sashing, plus I do like the idea of cornerstones.

You will need to make more blocks to do 4 surrounded by sashing since you have an odd number of rows. I considered doing this block but found it too busy for my taste. There are other layouts you could try or as others have suggested, use sashing. It is going to be a great quilt however you choose to finish. Looking forward to seeing the end result.

I can see a dark black/white print as the sashing with the background as the cornerstones for each block.

Very pretty...and great suggestions already. I would probably not sash it if it was mine but I would put a mini white and wider colored border to anchor it. So sweet to do this for this grieving mother. Can't imagine.

I would consider turning the blocks around, placing the yellow ones in the center and lining the other ones up to end with the dark ones at the edges. This could remind her that the sun is still shining through the clouds of the other ones around it. Make up a good story. Thanks for doing that for her.
